How to celebrate July 4th in Mobile!

We know Mobilians love a good firework show! As Independence Day draws closer, we want you to know where you can get your firework fix!

As we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the USS ALABAMA Battleship Memorial Park this year, we are sure the Independence Day Fireworks Spectacular will be one for the books.  The spectacular will begin with a red, white and blue salute to our area Veterans and the finale will honor the Park’s 50th anniversary!

Area food trucks, along with the Battleship’s snack bar, The Galley, will be selling concessions on the grounds. In addition, local band Emerge will be playing from 7:00 pm until 9:00 pm.

So, pack your lawn chairs and blankets and spend the evening celebrating July 4th the Mobile way at the USS ALABAMA Battleship Memorial Park! Gates open at 5:00 pm, admission is $5 per car.

Does your idea of a perfect 4th of July involve sand between your toes?

Dauphin Island

Then picture yourself here and head down to Dauphin Island to watch fireworks from the public beach. The day kicks off early — at 11:00 am join the Dauphin Island Veterans Association for a ceremony at the Water Tower Plaza honoring our veterans. Then spend the afternoon on the water and grab a sno-cone before the sun goes down. Family time and fireworks will begin at 8:45 pm at the public beach next door to the Little Red Schoolhouse.

Last, but certainly not least, what better way to celebrate America’s birthday than with fireworks AND America’s favorite pastime? Head to Hank Aaron Stadium to support Mobile’s Minor League Baseball team, the BayBears!

Fireworks at the Hank

The Hank has it all for adults and kids alike, with an inflatable amusement area right inside the stadium. Cheer for our home team in the opener of their 5 game series against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos. The game begins at 7:05pm and the annual July 4th fireworks show will follow.

Have fun! And, of course, tag #SoMobile so we can see the fun too!

5 Discoveries about GulfQuest Maritime Museum

We are over the moon about the opening date for GulfQuest! September 26 can’t get here soon enough!

In the meantime, here’s just a touch of what you’ll get to experience!

1.  There’s an incredible orientation film that will give you goosebumps. It’s a high-definition, multi-media presentation that uses stunning {and we mean S T U N N I N G} panoramic images and authentic voices of people along the Gulf Coast. It truly captures the character and culture of our nation’s southeastern doorway to the world.

2.  Treasures, the museum store, is an exhibit unto itself. You’ll feel you have come upon a sunken Spanish Galleon, with floors of planks and sand littered with spilled jewels and a ceiling that resembles the surface of the water.

3.  The flags in GulfQuest’s logo are nautical signal flags that spell out the museum’s name. Every bit of GulfQuest is a learning opportunity. Even the restrooms – you’ll have to trust us on this one!

4.  Get ready to meet the Pelican Girls. They were 23, “young and well-bred” women who were brought to Mobile from Paris in 1704 as prospective brides for the single Canadian and French settlers. In one special exhibit, you will gaze in to an old mirror, where the ghostly images of two French women tell their stories.

5.  While dining at GulfQuest’s cafe, ‘The Galley’,  you’ll be able to keep track of the shipping traffic coming and going through the Port of Mobile with the exhibit, ‘Ship Trackers’. There is a 15-second delay, so it’s almost real-time. It will show you the name of the vessel, country of origin, etc.

We’ll keep you updated on all things #GulfQuest between now and September 26!

First Airbus 320 Family Aircraft Parts Have Arrived

Strike up the band, we’ve got some celebrating to do!

The first parts for the first Airbus 320 family aircraft have arrived in Mobile!!!

Jetblue Arrival

{Backgrounder: Airbus announced in 2012 the choice to create an A320 Family jetliner final assembly line in Mobile- officially called the Airbus U.S. Manufacturing Facility – and is the company’s first production site in America.}

Huge time for Mobile!

So, what do we do to celebrate?

We have a parade, of course! Everyone is invited to catch a front-row seat as Airbus’ first major components make their way to Mobile Aeroplex at Brookley on Sunday, June 21.

Who do we get to lead the parade? Another no-brainer.

The Excelsior Band!  They have been leading our parades since 1883. And, we wouldn’t have it any other way.

Here’s what you need to know if you want to join Sunday’s celebration.

-Come to Mobile Aeroplex via Michigan Avenue and you’ll be directed from there on where to park.

-The parade will begin at 2:20 p.m. along the following route: Down Baker and Baker Street Extension, turn left on Broad Street, right onto 15th Street and right onto Broad Street before proceeding down Aerospace Drive/Airbus Way to the Airbus manufacturing facility.

-The procession is expected to take about 30 to 45 minutes with the parade route along Broad and 15th streets closing to traffic at 2:15 p.m. and reopening once the fanfare has passed.

IT’S A GREAT TIME FOR MOBILE!  See you at the parade!

Campo Santo Summer Concert Series

Sit back and enjoy summer in the city with Campo Santo Summer Concert Series!  It’s quite possibly the best way to usher in the weekend!

We’re talking live music from local and regional bands each Thursday in Cathedral Square from 5:00 – 7:30 pm.

Campo Santo

The series is one of many celebrations commemorating the 25th anniversary of Main Street Mobile and is made possible through a partnership with Gulf Distributing Company and the City of Mobile’s Special Events team.

Your night doesn’t have to be over once the concert ends. Plan on having dinner or drinks at one of downtown’s many fine establishments after the concert. Check out where to go HERE.

It’s hard to top an outdoor concert on a summer night in Mobile! The series kicked off last week and will go until July 16!

Stay Cool, Mobile

We won’t beat around the bush– it’s hot in Mobile right now. Thankfully, there’s so much to do that can cool you down!  Playing on a splash pad, getting on a boat with family or friends or cruising the Delta on a kayak are just a few of the ways to escape the summer heat.

It’s all about those activities this week as our #SoMOBILE photo theme is STAY COOL, MOBILE. Show us how you cool off in Mobile so visitors know what to do when they come!

Then, post it to Instagram, Facebook, Twitter or wherever else your happy heart desires. Just be sure to use the hashtag #SoMOBILE.

Have fun!

5 Things to know about Snapper Season in Mobile

It’s a happy week for anglers in Mobile – it’s SNAPPER SEASON!

Snapper season is a popular time in Mobile. Boatloads of anglers take off to bring home the beloved and quite delicious red snapper.  However, with snapper season comes some some rules. Anglers have only 10 days in the season (you can hire a charter boat until July 15), they can only catch 2 snapper per day and the fish must be 16 inches in length or longer to keep.

Moral of the story – it’s kind of a big deal and time is most definitely of the essence.

We asked our friend Captain Mike Thierry to give us some expert advice so you can take advantage of the short fishing window.

5 Things to Know about Snapper Season in Mobile from Captain Mike

1. There are more snapper now than he’s ever seen.

2. Do not fish on the bottom. Fish about 1/2 way down.

3. Be courteous! Give boats plenty of room.

4. There are a lot of public reefs and places to fish.

5. If you don’t have your own boat, you can join a group on a party boat that takes individuals and small groups. Or, of course, you can call Captain Mike until July 15!
